Sarah Polley endorses Nash for NDP leadership
Toronto / Jan 4 , 2012 – Canadian icon and activist Sarah Polley has announced her support for NDP leadership candidate, Peggy Nash.
“I believe that of all the candidates in this race, Peggy Nash has the greatest ability to reach out to people who may not have supported the NDP in the past,” said Polley.
“Peggy is an intensely principled leader with proven respect for grassroots social movements.”
Polley – an acclaimed actor, director, and writer – has garnered numerous awards and nominations for her accomplishments in film and television. Her social and political activism has focused on issues ranging from poverty and public health to human rights and fair global trade. Polley served on the transition team of former Toronto Mayor David Miller.
“I believe Peggy has the experience and toughness needed to defeat Stephen Harper in the next federal election and become our next Prime Minister,” said Polley.
“Whether it’s on the environment or the economy, Peggy has shown consistently and effectively her ability to fight Harper on critical issues.”
“And of course,” added Polley, “Peggy’s support of Canada’s artistic community is unfailing.”
Nash has been a strong advocate for Canada’s artistic community. She fought the Harper government’s cut to arts funding and introduced the Tax Fairness for Artists motion in the House of Commons in June 2007 to allow artists to average their taxable income.
Nash thanked Polley for her endorsement: “I am honoured to have the support of one of Canada’s most respected artists. Sarah’s work as a cultural ambassador for Canada on the world stage and lifelong commitment to social justice make her a national treasure.”
