Peggy Nash nabs support of United Steelworkers Toronto Area Council

Toronto / January 23, 2012 – At a recent meeting, the United Steelworkers Toronto Area Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of endorsing Peggy Nash, MP (Parkdale–High Park), in her candidacy for the leadership of the New Democratic Party of Canada.

“Peggy’s leadership can bring about the real progressive change that working people need,” said Carolyn Egan, President of the Toronto Area Council.

Mike Seaward, Chair of the Council’s Political Action Committee added: “Peggy understands how badly the manufacturing sector has been decimated. She is the one person who can bring back good-paying jobs that have pensions.”

“I am truly honoured to have the valuable support of this Council,” said Nash. “I share its goals of protecting workers’ rights and building a stronger and more just economy.”

The United Steelworkers Toronto Area Council represents 13,000 workers in the Greater Toronto Area.

“I’ve known Peggy for years — first, as an effective union leader, then as an outstanding parliamentarian. In a field of strong candidates, Peggy stands head and shoulders above her opponents. She’s a brilliant negotiator and knows how to resolve differences. The NDP needs Peggy, the federal parliament needs her leadership, and Canadians need her. Peggy is top quality Prime Ministerial material.”
