In just a few days we will be electing the next leader of the NDP. That decision is one that cannot be taken lightly. The considerable quality of the candidates up for the job does not make that decision any easier. We will have to take the time to deeply reflect on what it is that unites us behind the NDP banner, where I have been working side by side with many of you over the past 15 years. Over the past few weeks, I have been reflecting on what the NDP represents for Canada and I have decided its importance, and therefore the importance of this leadership race, warrants that I declare my support publicly.

I support Peggy Nash. I believe she has the required qualities needed to lead our party and our country. We need to find in our leader a strong grassroots soul who knows how to attain our common objectives. We are new-democrats and we have our distinct political identity that we must promote clearly and proudly. Peggy is the one that can take on the Harper government while maintaining our ideals that unite us and motivate us to roll up our sleeves and put our shoulder to the wheel.

Endorsements keep rolling in for Peggy Nash

Three new provincial politicians announce support

Toronto / 19 March 2012 – Peggy Nash, MP for Parkdale—High Park, counts three more provincial politicians among her growing list of supporters.

Highly respected in Nova Scotia for his work as a community volunteer and social justice advocate, Leonard Preyra, MLA for Halifax Citadel and Chair of Political Science at St. Mary’s University (on leave) issued a statement to regional press outlining his reasons for throwing support to Nash.

“Our new leader must be able to communicate the party’s position in a calm, constructive, and straightforward manner. Because she has these qualities and more, and because she would make an outstanding leader of the Official Opposition & prime minister in waiting, I will vote for Peggy,” said Preyra.

Former BC Minister of Finance, Elizabeth Cull, cited Nash’s experience as finance and industry critic, as well as years as a negotiator in the auto and airline sectors, as reasons for backing her.

Let’s keep our eye on the real prize

17 March 2012

Friends,

With convention just days away and so much being made recently about conflicts within our NDP ‘family’, I am hoping that you, like me, want to keep an eye on the real prize. Now is the time for us to channel our collective energy and effort toward the real target — forming government in 2015.

At the same time as this leadership race is ramping up, parliament wound down. In its final days, the Harper Conservatives showed Canadians just why it is so urgent the NDP replace them:

Some of the now infamous fraudulent robo-calls were found to be targeting voters identified as “anti-conservative”. The federal government showed new disdain for collective bargaining. Bill C-10 — the omnibus crime bill — speaks volumes about the Conservatives’ flawed approach to community safety. And we challenged them on plans to make sweeping changes to section 35 of the Fisheries Act that will essentially strip habitat protection out of the legislation.

“I’ve seen Peggy first hand in the House of Commons standing up for strong progressive values; she has a clear vision for a more equal and just Canada and she has the strength to lead us in that direction. She has the knowledge as a community activist to lead and grow our party and the proven experience on economic issues to take the NDP into the next election.”
