She began as a booking agent for Air Canada, joined the union and eventually rose to the highest ranks of the labour movement. Peggy Nash would negotiate some the Canadian Auto Workers most significant agreements. Now she’s in the race for the leadership of the NDP. Our conversation with NDP candidates continues with Peggy Nash.

Peggy Nash had lots of campaign promises for Okanagan voters on Tuesday – promises based on her becoming the next federal NDP leader.
The Toronto MP would work on reducing inter-provincial barriers to B.C. wine, support a Buy B.C. program to help farmers, get their ideas for promoting local produce and oppose raw log exports in favour of Canadian processing.
She made stops in Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops to listen to regional concerns, to share ideas about regional development, a green economy and the environment. This third visit to British Columbia during Nash’s campaign included stops in Prince George and Nelson.
“I would love for the rest of Canada to be able to discover the fabulous B.C. wines. The Okanagan Valley, of course, produces some incredible wines, and I appreciate right now the marketing situation with liquor control boards.”

Question 1. What is the most pressing issue facing Canadians at the moment?
The most pressing issue facing Canadians is the economy. Every one of us is concerned about it, yet the Harper Conservatives are taking our economy in a reckless direction. They aren’t creating the sort of jobs that a strong and stable economy needs — good, quality, local — and their policies are just not generating the revenue we need to sustain social programs and invest in green technology/energy production. While inequality grows and there are fewer and fewer resources for infrastructure, our current government avoids targeting support to revive important sectors like manufacturing. Canadians deserve a government that will pursue innovative solutions to the economy that support everyone, not squander opportunities to green it, grow it, and stabilize it.

A week before New Democrats start voting, candidate Peggy Nash remains confident she can beat six others to become the new leader of the official Opposition.
“There were two polls released last week that show me in No. 2 position, and that’s likely to grow with a little support,” Nash said on a visit to Kamloops on Tuesday.
Both of those polls were internal, produced by the camps of fellow candidates Thomas Mulcair and Paul Dewar.
Mulcair’s poll showed Nash trailing him in first place by 14 percentage points. Nash was the favoured second choice at 25 per cent. Dewar’s poll also suggested Mulcair is leading, but indicated Nash might give him a run for his money. Given a second choice, Nash is slightly behind Dewar in first place.

The text of a note sent to supporters today by Nash campaign manager Riccardo Filippone. (I’ve only deleted the bit where Mr. Filippone asks for your money.)
Dear friends,
Did you hear John Ibbitson’s suggestion that the NDP must either “elect a leader with the best chance of entrenching the party’s recent political gains in Quebec and beyond or continue dreaming the social-democratic dream”?
Peggy’s answer to that? We can have both.
I have worked with Peggy since she was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006. Over this time, I’ve had the opportunity to gain insight into the impressive career that has led her to this point. At every turn, I see the realization of so many dreams she aspires to, on behalf of us all.
They said it was just a dream for a woman to rise to the highest executive levels of a national union. Peggy did it. They said it was just a dream for a woman to handle major auto sector negotiations in North America. Peggy did it.
“Peggy Nash is a passionate and tireless woman who inspires me immensely. As a woman from Québec and a young politician, I share her vision of a country which protects its environment, which defends the less fortunate and fights to improve public services.”
